However, hull design isn’t just about speed and interior volume. there’s also stability and tenderness, which is a boat’s tendency to rock. the boats described above have planing hulls, which means they have hard chines. this creates port and starboard flats that create lift and help plane the boat and keep it on an even keel.. Planing hulls do not like being operated at low speeds; they throw a most unfriendly bow wave. planing hulls are not the best of sea boats especially in severe conditions. for local and coastal cruising it is worth noting that a planing hull may allow you to get home before the bad weather arrives.. Plans; info. planing boat theory; many books use speed/length ratios to determine if a hull is planing or not, but that is not satisfying since it only holds for boats that have nearly the same characteristics such as hull shape, weight, etc. for instance, at one end of the hull shape spectrum, the 16’ hobie cats and other multihulls can.

If the boat is doing around 5 knots the second wave will be about 16ft behind the bow wave. so a 16ft boat would be at hull speed, an 8ft boat would be truly “planing” (it’s ok to use the word descriptively, but not technically) and a 25 footer would be well below hull speed. here is a picture of my sailing a goat island skiff at mooloolaba.. Displacement vs planing hulls; what is the definition? what are the properties? what are the advantages and disadvantages? follow us on facebook at https://w.... Design and construction of high speed, hard chine planing hull. a hull at higher speed, hull size, hull shape , design displacement, and the trim, or running angle are important parameters.
